Open Charge Point Interface - OCPI

Roaming - Charge point status - ¬†Access and price information ‚Äď Billing

Open Charge Point Interface (OCPI) supplies correct charge station information such as location, availability and pricing, manages bilateral roaming, and allows for real-time billing and mobile access to charge stations. For the electric mobility market, OCPI is the key to a more straightforward and accessible charging system based on objective, accurate information.

Why this update?

OCPI is the key to transparency and openness in the field of charging electric vehicles. In this update, we hope to share information about the associated challenges and solutions. We explain why you should participate, what OCPI offers you and your company, and most importantly what it can do for the EV driver. Look forward to receiving this newsletter on a monthly basis!

OCPI - The answer to many challenges

Open Charge Point Interface (OCPI) is a protocol between operators and service providers.

Access to charge points is improved by means of developing and offering independent interface communication software between the charge point and the charge vendor. OCPI can have an enormous impact on the speed at which publically available charging infrastructure develops.
OCPI is an internationally supported independent interface that supports affordability and availability of charging infrastructure with:

-¬†A uniform manner of roaming ‚Äď can be bilateral or through a central system
- Lower costs
- Simplified access
- More choice
- Accurate information about charge point location, status and fees

What does OCPI offer?

 A good roaming system

To ensure access to charge stations, it is important that a good roaming system is in place to exchange data between charge point operators (connected to charge point owners) and service providers (connected to EV drivers). Roaming can be bilateral and set up through central coordinating systems. A uniform interface is preferable.

Real-time information about location, availability and price

There is currently no real-time information about location and availability of charge stations. There are many websites, apps and interfaces, but it's difficult for the EV driver to get the big picture. At this time, there is also no way to inform EV drivers by way of mobile apps about the real-time price of a charge session before, during and direct after the transaction. Uniform interface is required for this.

A uniform way of exchanging data

A uniform manner of exchanging Notification Data Records (NDRs) and Charge Data Records (CDRs) between operators and service providers is missing.

Use of any charge station

Use of any charge station without preregistration via a mobile app is difficult because of many different interfaces.

Status ‚Äď Who is involved?

OCPI started in the Netherlands in 2014 and just released version 2.0. in December 2015.
An international group of companies already support OCPI. Initiators are EV Box, The New Motion, ElaadNL, Greenflux and Last Mile solutions. Other participants include Next Charge, Freshmile, Plugsurfing, BeCharged, Charge-partner, Hubject, and Siemens. Several other major organizations and roaming platforms are interested in participating. The Netherlands Knowledge Platform for Charging Infrastructure (NKL) facilitates and coordinates this project to guarantee progress and ensure development and results. Part of this project is to find a place to continue development in the future.
